If you are snoring and have tried a snoring mouthpiece which only made your jaw hurt or made your TMJ pain worse, then a tongue retaining oral appliance such as the AveoTSD or MPowRx may be the answer to both your snoring and TMJ jaw pain problems.

If you are snoring and have tried a snoring mouthpiece which only made your jaw hurt or made your TMJ pain worse, then a tongue retaining oral appliance  such as the AveoTSD or MPowRx may be the answer to both your snoring and TMJ jaw pain problems.

How a snoring mouthpiece works
Dental snoring mouthpieces are recommended as a first treatment option for treating snoring and obstructive sleep apnea by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. The most commonly used snoring mouthpiece is called the Mandibular Advancement Device (MAD). Snoring is caused when the tongue blocks the airway during sleep. The MAD stops snoring by moving the lower jaw and tongue forward during sleep.  This lower jaw, mandibular advancement device, positions the tongue away from the obstruction in the back of the throat by moving and holding the jaw forward during sleep. The MAD device attaches to sound teeth in order to move the jaw forward.

Jaw Pain and TMJ Problems caused by  MAD Snoring Mouthpiece
Although very effective at opening the airway, some people suffer from pain as the ligaments holding the jaw in place are stretched during the forward movement of the lower jaw.  The MAD holds the jaw forward during the entire night of sleeping.  Most people are able to adjust to this advancement by simply biting on their back teeth when they wake up. However for others, this advancement can cause jaw pain or aggravate an existing TMJ (jaw joint) condition. Furthermore, people with loose teeth (periodontal disease), dentures or missing teeth may not be able to comfortably wear a MAD.

Solutions to the TMJ jaw pain caused by MAD snoring mouthpiece
Give it more time or refit your mouthpiece
The first option is to try to see if the body will adjust to the advancement over time.  Usually the pain will subside within 2-3 weeks of continuous wear.
If the pain is severe or does not subside over time, then refit the mouthpiece to reduce the amount of forward lower jaw advancement. Most boil and bite mouthpieces can be refitted several time till the snoring stops and the jaw becomes comfortable.

Get an AveoTSD or MPowRx mouthpiece
Finally, you can try a mouthpiece which does not advance the jaw.  A category of oral appliances know as tongue stabilizing devices or tongue retaining devices  hold the tongue forward during sleep to effectively stop snoring.

These devices gently suction the tongue into a retaining bulb and hold the tongue forward by resting on the gums at the front of the mouth. These particular stop snoring dental appliances require a prescription which can be filled online. The MouthGuard Store offers a professional diagnostic service which can qualify users or fill your doctor’s prescription for these essential products.

If you have tried a snoring mouthpiece but it caused jaw pain or made your TMJ worse then you can effectively get relief with either the AveoTSD or the MPowRx mouthpieces. These tongue retaining devices have been shown to help treat snoring and obstructive sleep apnea safely and comfortably.
