Is the age of the athlete and the possibility of providing space for erupting teeth in mixed dentition (age 6-12) going to affect the mouth guard? Will the design of the mouth guard be appropriate for the level of competition being played?

Boil and bite mouthguards offer the flexibility of refitting as the mouth changes to accommodate for erupting teeth and the space for new teeth. Although the protection and fit is not as good as custom mouthguards, the boil and bite mouthpieces are more economical and should last at least one season.  Thereafter they can be replaced to accommodate for the additional teeth. Purchase a good quality mouthguard to obtain good performance. Some custom fit mouthguards can be designed to accommodate the erupting teeth if the athlete’s age is properly identified.

Purchase a good quality mouthguard from reputable dealers or dentists to assure optimal performance during competition.
