The excessive stress and muscle activity of the jaw muscles contracting during the night (and sometimes during the day) causing the teeth to come in contact with maximum force. This excessive muscle activity can fatigue the muscles; damage the jaw joint (TMJ) and damage teeth and supporting structures.

The results of this teeth grinding include broken teeth, broken dental work, teeth sensitivity, headaches, neck pain, shoulder pain, jaw pain, jaw clicking and popping, worn short teeth and other facial pain.
