What is best, an upper or a lower night guard?

Many people choose an upper nightguard because it interferes less with the tongue. Others find that the lower is less obtrusive and reduces the gagging reflex.  Both seem to work equally well and the final preference is up to the customer. The nightguard depends on teeth for retention and teeth need to be present in the opposing dental arch for the appliance to be effective. Sometimes dental work may prohibit wearing the guard in one of the dental arches. Some say that a lower guard makes speaking easier.
